Where do you come from then? Exactly?
Thursday 6 October 2011
We had an enjoyable and entertaining evening in the company of Pearl McCabe. Pearl started off by speaking about her childhood in the Rhondda Valley and about the expressions and language used by the local people. These brought back fond memories to many members of the Edinburgh Welsh Society. Then, from the perspective of someone who has moved from Wales to live in Scotland, Pearl compared habits and ways of life in the two countries. Good to hear that Mam is still in charge in South Wales! Thanks to Pearl for a most humorous evening.
Opening Evening
Friday 23 September 2011
The Edinburgh Welsh Society’s new season of activities started very successfully with the Opening Evening in the Tusitala. It was good to see everyone again after the summer holidays.
We looked back at each of the decades since the Society was founded through the memories of members, pictures and poetry. Do you remember the Queen’s Coronation, the first man on the moon, the release of Nelson Mandela, the eisteddfods, the cymanfas and the fun? The time has really gone past quickly!
After a tasty supper and the chance to chat to friends old and new, the traditional annual quiz tested the competitors’ knowledge in different areas, not totally seriously, but with a strong sense of competition.
Everyone spoke about the importance of the Society in their lives and the warm welcome and friendship they had found there. It is good to think that the Edinburgh Welsh Society has been in existence for nearly a hundred years now, offering friendship, an extended family and fun to everyone in Scotland’s capital and beyond who has an interest in Wales.
Visit to the Murals at Prestonpans
Saturday 16 July 2011
Thirteen members of the Edinburgh Welsh Society enjoyed a very interesting talk on the murals by local artist, Andrew Crummy. These can be seen inside the Gothenburg and outside on walls around the town. Time and the weather prevented us from seeing all of the 30+ murals, so a return visit is a must.
Mr Crummy also gave us a brief introduction to the Prestonpans Tapestry, designed by him and stitched by many talented embroiderers. We then enjoyed a delicious lunch in the relaxed atmosphere of the Gothenburg Inn.
St David’s Day Dinner

Anyone care to add captions to these?
Christmas Service and Party
Sunday 12 December 2010
On Sunday 12 December we held our annual Christmas Service and Party. Despite the weather, many members and friends came along to sing their favourite Christmas carols. Huw John and his team also gave us the chance to think about the history of the Welsh language through an excellent play telling the story of the translation of the Bible into Welsh. This was followed by a wonderful party during which Santa called to see the children.
