Borders train trip

Borders train trip plus visit to Abbotsford House

ews2-022es

What can I say! The train was on time. The bus was waiting at the station and delivered us right to the car park of Abbotsford House. Our tables were laid ready for lunch. Our guide was called Owen and is half Welsh, but fluent in French and German and absolutely delightful. The threatened rain didn’t amount to much more than a few spots, and 16 members and 2 guests had a splendid day out. Huge thanks to Lilian for putting it all together.

A cheery group of us met in “The Four Marys” and had a relaxed lunch. We then walked around part of the heritage trail of this interesting town. The weather was kind and Keith had done his homework so we were entertained and enlightened.

St David’s Day dinner at the Mortonhall Golf Club

  • Members enjoying themselves

31 members enjoyed our Cinio Gwyl Dewi at the Mortonhall Golf Clubhouse. Our guest speaker, Dr Colin Mumford was a delight, regaling us with his “Skirmishes with the Welsh”. Thanks to Helen Campbell who said Grace, Jean Phillips who produced an elegant arrangement of daffodils for the table, Wyn Davies who gave the vote of thanks, and Jim Hughes who led the community singing.

Christmas festivities at the Reid

IMG_1343h

Our Christmas celebrations got off to a splendid start with our service of Welsh carols and Welsh and English lessons ably led by Margaret Brandie, with Ewan Armstrong at the piano. We then sat down to a delicious vestry tea provided by our members. This was followed by party games and finally a visit from Santa.

Harvest Thanksgiving Service

Sunday 30 October 2011

A good number of members of the Edinburgh Welsh Society, ages ranging from 7 to 87, met for a family service in the Reid Memorial Church Hall. The address by Ruth Davies, Reader at Liberton Kirk, was very much appreciated by all. There was plenty of time to chat over tea and cakes after the service, and generous gifts of food were taken to the Bethany Christian Trust for their work with homeless people.
