EWSNEWS – May 2016

The story so far…

Tuesday, 12 April. Visit to Newbattle Abbey. 7.30pm

The evening was dark and the weather inclement but the welcome from our guide was warm and the visit so interesting we stayed over an hour and a half. Well worth thinking about arranging another visit if members are interested….

Thursday, 21 April. Annual General Meeting. Reid small hall at 7.30pm

A lively meeting and plenty of ideas for the committee to work on. And speaking of which, the following stand for a further year:-

President:     Mr David Hughes
Treasurer:    Mr Keith Welsher
Secretary:     Mrs Jennifer Welsher
Financial Examiner:  Mr Jim Hughes

Committee:   Mrs Margaret Brandie; Dr Huw John; Mrs Lilian John; Mrs Stephanie Ledger; Mr Hywel Williams

Forthcoming events:

Saturday, 25 June 2016. Lunch and walking tour of Linlithgow from 12.30pm

We plan to meet in “The Four Marys” on Linlithgow High Street for lunch at 12.30. Keith and I have sampled the fare and food and staff came up to scratch. After lunch, weather permitting, we hope to walk around this wonderful town following parts of the Linlithgow Heritage Trail, visiting some of the main places of architectural and historical interest, and finally, a stroll around the loch which will take about an hour. If the weather is mean, or you already know all you want about the history, there are shops to mooch around.  There is a handy car park just behind the Cross House (EH49 7EU for satnav) off the main square, a free car park for shoppers (2 hour strict maximum) if you are only coming for the lunch; but even better – First bus 38A stops outside the Four Marys and runs every 15 minutes on Saturdays. I need to know numbers for lunch A.S.A.P. please so e-mail moc.liamgnull@dccswe stating the number for the lunch and/or walk.

Sunday, 24 July. Lunch, walk and visit from 12.30pm*** time to be confirmed

A tasty lunch in the “Railbridge Inn” South Queensferry should set us up nicely for a walk to Dalmeny House. We have a tour booked for 3.30pm for £10 per adult, £9 concession. Then back to South Queensferry. Keith and I will have scouted the walk out before my June EWSNEWS so watch this space. (The Railbridge require numbers and a £5 deposit per person – see next EWSNEWS) Those not wanting to walk could have a leisurely lunch and drive round to D H.

Saturday, 3 September – Borders train trip plus visit to Abbotsford.

As requested at the AGM we are trying out the recently re-opened Borders Railway. Full details of times, costs etc. In next EWSNEWS.
