EWSNEWS – January 2018

The story so far…

Friday 24 November.   St Andrew’s Social.  Priestfield Church Hall at 7.30pm.

Our St Andrew’s night supper party at Priestfield Church Hall was well attended. Our lovely dancers, some we have had the pleasure of meeting before, and some new, tiny performers, started the evening beautifully. Our haggis supper was hot, plentiful and very tasty. Hywel and Pam produced another of their splendid quizzes, and we rounded the evening off with community singing.

Sunday 10 December.  Christmas celebrations from 3.00pm in the Reid Memorial Church large hall.

Willing helpers, including Ceinlys and Ynyra Williams and Olivia Brandie, arrived early to set tables for our tea and chairs for our service. Margaret Brandie led the service of carols and lessons with Huw Thomas at the piano. This was followed by our family party starting with a scrumptious tea (with rainbow jelly and custard). Many thanks to all who brought food and helped to serve. The party continued with games and a visit from Santa for the children (and grandchildren).

Tuesday 5 to Saturday 9 December. Christmas Pantomime: “Knight Fever”.

The usual delightfully amateur frolic put on by Forth Dimension “am-dram” group.  Huw Thomas made a regal-ish King Arthur. Always good fun.

Forthcoming events:

Sunday 21 January. Film show in the Reid Memorial Church small hall at 3.00pm.

Our film will be “Grand Slam”.  A Welsh rugby fan (Hugh Griffith) looks for an old flame while he and his mates are in France to see their country’s team play in a tournament’s final match. Also starring Windsor Davies, Dewi “Pws” Morris and Sion Probert.  It sounds like fun to me, how about you? Light refreshments will be served afterwards.

Friday 9 February. Chinese banquet in Priestfield Church hall at 7.30pm.

We meet at Priestfield Church Hall, Dalkeith Road, EH16 5HW for our Chinese banquet served with non-alcofrolic elderflower, and followed by tea or coffee. (Please feel free to bring your own wine.) We can offer vegetarian alternatives but will need to know in advance! We then round off the evening with “turns” performed by our members.

The cost of the evening will be £12 each and we need numbers by Friday 2 February please, along with your cheque made payable to Edinburgh Welsh Society or Cymdeithas Cymry Dineidyn. Do you need a lift, or can you offer a lift?  Please indicate this when you let me know (0131 335 3161 or moc.liamgnull@dccswe).

Society news:

It is with the greatest sadness that I tell you that our lovely Joan Griffith died on 1 December 2017.  Her funeral on Friday 15 December was well attended by family and friends, including many of our members.  Joan will be remembered for her great kindness, her very warm hospitality, her enthusiasm for all things Welsh, and her unforgettable laugh.  She will be hugely missed by all who knew her.  We send our love to her son Owen John and his wife Beth.

Our very best get well wishes go to all who have been struck by the many nasty bugs going round over the last months.  I hope we all enjoy a happy and healthy 2018 and I look forward everso much to seeing you soon.
