EWSNEWS – June 2018

The story so far…

Friday 20 April. Cinio Gwyl Dewi at Mortonhall Golf Club.

Our dinner went splendidly; our Gwr Gwadd, John Evans was a delight (well, if your allegiances lie south of mid-Wales, especially so). The change of date had good and bad consequences, sadly a few on our original guest list were unable to come, but other members made up the numbers – and we could arrive in daylight and appreciate the views from the clubhouse windows. Our thanks to Jean Phillips for providing daffodils for the tables.

Sunday 22 April. Mini Gymanfa in the Reid Memorial Church large hall.

The redecoration was finished in time for us to use the large hall and piano. Huw Thomas organised the Gymanfa and played the piano.  He prefaced each hymn with brief but illuminating biographic notes on the writers of both the words and music. A very lovely afternoon.

Thursday 26 April. AGM in the Reid Memorial Church small hall.

The meeting went well and the following agreed to continue to serve on the committee:

We are now busy putting together a programme of events for the coming year …

Forthcoming events:

Saturday 28 July. Conducted walk starting at 4.00pm.

Come and discover the gardens, “wee green gems”, hidden behind the historic buildings of the Old Town. Our guide, Jean Bareham, will meet us outside John Knox House (43 High Street, EH1 1SR) and will lead us in and out of small spaces steeped in the history of Edinburgh as we walk down toward the Scottish Parliament. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes and will cost £6 per person, payable on the day. Comfortable shoes recommended, and I recall the High Street can be a bit chilly even in the summer! Jean suggests an upper limit of 20, so if you are thinking of joining us, please let me know as soon as possible. Please email me at moc.liamgnull@dccswe or phone 0131 335 3161. We are thinking of popping to a nearby café afterwards, and would be glad of any recommendations and obviously will need numbers.

Programme for 2018–19

Our Croeso opening meeting will be finalised very soon and the whole programme printed as soon as all i’s dotted and t’s crossed.

Subscriptions

Our subs for 2018–19 are now due and remain at £15 single or £22.50 family. Please make your cheque payable to Edinburgh Welsh Society or Cymdeithas Cymry Dineidyn.

Society news:

I was very sad indeed to hear only today (22 June) from Meirion Lewis (Penicuik) that Eirlys passed away last month.  Eirlys was a member for many years before she became unwell, and was Hon. Sec. from 1982–4.  She was a very lovely person and will be hugely missed.  Our love and deepest sympathies go to Meirion, Arwel and Gwen and their families.

Our best wishes to any member who is poorly.

I look forward everso much to seeing you soon.
