EWSNEWS January 2023

I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas. Wishing you a happy and healthy new year from President and Committee.

The story so far

Friday 25 November. St Andrew’s Evening at Priestfield Church hall at 7.30pm

Many thanks to Lilian and Huw for organising our supper party. There was a generous amount of tasty supper, and a very pleasant evening enjoyed by the twenty members who braved the dark chilly night. We had an episode of Call my Bluff, with splendid performances by the panel, Cled Thomas, Janet Thomas and Walter Whitelaw, and words via the ‘electronic noticeboard’, David Hughes. No EWS event would be complete without a cup of tea and a song or two ably led by Jim Hughes.

Sunday 11 December. Christmas Carol Service at the Reid Memorial Church at 3.00pm

Our service of carols and lessons was led by Margaret Brandie, with Huw Thomas accompanying our carols. Chris Brandie’s well-thought-out and beautifully-illustrated address gave us plenty of food for thought. And speaking of food, many thanks to all who brought the tasty titbits that made up our tea afterwards.

Forthcoming events:

You are invited to our Chinese banquet at Priestfield, 2 Marchhall Place, Edinburgh, EH16 5HW, with plenty of chat as we tuck in to a lavish spread followed by shortbread and tea or coffee. If you would prefer a vegetarian meal, please let me know in good time. If you fancy a glass of wine or cordial, please bring your own bottle. Glasses will be provided. This will be followed by entertainment (a quiz) and a spot of community singing to round off the evening.

The charge will be £15 each, and Lilian and I need names ASAP pleaseby 24 January and payment by cheque or bank transfer. Please let me know you are coming by email to gro.yteicoshslewhgrubnidenull@yraterces.

Cor Meibion Taf, a well-known male voice choir from Cardiff, invite us to a “Sing-along” at Stewarts Melville Rugby Club (523 Ferry Road, Edinburgh  EH5 2DW) at 1.00pm on Saturday 11 February. A warm welcome to rugby supporters and all others. The choir are giving a concert at Mount Stewart House on the Isle of Bute the previous day and then driving to Edinburgh on Saturday morning. We wish them a fair crossing and safe trip.

Friday 3 March. Cinio Gwyl Dewi at Mortonhall Golf Club, 7.00 for 7.30pm

I am delighted to report that we have our Gwr Gwadd for this year’s dinner.

Our President writes, “David Paul Lunn is currently the Dean of the Veterinary School at Liverpool University. Paul and I were at school together and we were close friends. We started university in Liverpool on the same day and whilst our paths went different ways, but we stayed in touch and in more recent years we have again had regular contact.”

I shall be sending further information about menu choices and price per person in my February EWSNEWS so please mark the date in your diary and watch this space …

I look forward to seeing you very soon.
