EWSNEWS – April 2021

The story so far …

Monday 1 March. Music, poems and pints evening at 7.00pm

This was a true Noson Lawen, hosted by Sian Roberts, and starring Ieuan Rhys (BBC actor in Pobl y Cwm, Dr Who etc.) Apart from songs, jokes, poems, and a reading from Under Milk Wood by the ensemble, there was a chance to greet Welsh folk from all over, including Florida, and a limerick competition judged by Mr Rhys himself. There were many entries  (not all strictly limericks, which were praised then eliminated – the judge was strict but fair) before a winner was announced – me! Everso chuffed.

Sian has let me know that they have two more events coming up soon:

  • 28 April at 7.00pm Tudur Owen in conversation with Ieuan Rhys and Phyl Harries. £15 per screen plus booking fee.
  • 1 May at 7.00pm A Welsh Romp, with Mabli Tudur, Ieuan Rhys and Phyl & Mags Harries. £20 per screen plus booking fee.

Sunday 7 March. A Zoom Gymanfa ganu at 3.00pm

A very lovely afternoon, splendidly put together by Margaret and Chris Brandie on the technical side and Huw and Janet Thomas who introduced ten of the top 20 favourite hymns. They researched interesting info on the composers of words (Janet) and music (Huw) and the hymns were then displayed so we could sing along to a rich variety of choirs and congregations. 27 members zoomed in from the comfort of their own homes.

Forthcoming events

Two meetings have been proposed, with the possible dates of Thursday 22 April or Friday 23 April; and Friday 21 May. We are waiting for confirmation of a speaker for one of these dates, and plan a quiz for the other. I am sorry I can’t be more specific at the moment, but keep these dates pencilled in your diary and watch this space.

Society news

Your Committee have met via Zoom to discuss how we proceed for the immediate future. In the absence of a formal AGM the current committee members have agreed to carry on for the time being. Any member wishing to comment on this proposal – please get in touch with me: secretary@edinburghwelshsociety.org. Any suggestions for zoom topics or outdoor get-togethers in the better weather, depending on the covid rules pertaining at the time would be very much appreciated.

We did not collect subscriptions for the year 2020–21 and do not propose to ask for subs for the coming year. Our President, David Hughes, is now also our Treasurer and he will have the accounts for the year 2020–21 audited and will provide a summary for all members in April.

We believe that our Zoom events are the best way forward for the next wee while so we will be investing in a further six months’ licence to Zoom.

Stay safe and I hope to see you via Zoom soon.
