EWSNEWS – August 2019
The story so far …
Saturday 20 July. Union Canal walk starting at 2.00pm
A happy band of members and friends walked along a shortish stretch of the canal, learning a lot about the flora, fauna and history of the environs. From there to Boroughmuir Rugby club for a quick drink (I want to say a “swift half”, for some reason) before crossing to the Kilted Pig for a good meal.
Forthcoming events
Pending the finalising of the next “EWS News” proper, here are some dates for the next three months:
Saturday 7 September – a local walk or visit. Details are being pulled together – probably early afternoon followed by some food and refreshments as on 20 July.
Friday 20 September – Croeso. The traditional start of the society’s programme will take place at Mortonhall Golf Club – 7.30 start.
Sunday 27 October – Thanksgiving Service at the Reid. Start at 3.00pm.
Please put them in your diaries! Details and further events to follow …
Society News
It is with enormous sadness that I report that Stephanie Ledger died last Friday, 26 July 2019. She had been very poorly for some time. Her funeral will take place on Friday 9 August at Mortonhall Crematorium at 1:00pm.
Stephanie joined the Society in the late 1960s and was a hugely enthusiastic and loyal member till the end. David tells me that she and a like-minded group won a verse-speaking contest back in the day. She served as Vice-President from 1998–9 and President from 1999–2000. She conducted parties of members around the Royal Botanic Gardens where she was a knowledgeable guide. She attended Welsh conversation classes. And last, but by no means least – she was Santa’s little helper, always putting a great deal of thought into the most suitable gifts for the wee ones.
Stephanie will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Our warmest thoughts and deepest sympathies go to David, to twin daughters Sian and Ceri and their families, and to her sister Hilary.
