EWSNEWS – October 2017
The story so far…
Sunday 8 October. Harvest thanksgiving. Reid large hall at 3.00pm.
Our Harvest service was held in the large hall of the Reid and was beautifully conducted by Margaret and Chris Brandie, with Huw Thomas at the piano. We had one hymn with English words, sung to a Welsh tune, and one new hymn, as suggested by members. The service was well attended and a table-full of donations of non-perishable “dried goods” was left to be taken to the local food bank following the service.
Wednesday 18 October. Illustrated talk. Broughton Rugby Club at 7.30pm.
Seven of our members took up the invitation to see Andy Johnson’s slide show, “Jewels of the Forth”. The photographs, following the course of the River Forth from its source in Loch Ard down to the North Sea, were stunningly beautiful. They were clearly captioned and showed us some of the history, geography, flora and fauna of our local area.
Forthcoming events:
Friday 24 November. St Andrew’s Social. Priestfield Church Hall at 7.30pm.
We meet at Priestfield Church Hall, Dalkeith Road, EH16 5HW for our St Andrew’s night supper party. We are very fortunate to have our lovely dancers start the evening with their display of traditional highland dances. This will be followed by a supper of haggis, neeps and tatties followed by cranachan; served with non-alcofrolic elderflower, and followed by tea or coffee. (Please feel free to bring your own wine.) We can offer a vegetarian haggis but will need to know in advance! We then round off the evening with “turns” performed by our members.
The cost of the evening will be £14 each and we need numbers by Friday 17 November please, along with your cheque made payable to Edinburgh Welsh Society or Cymdeithas Cymry Dineidyn. Do you need a lift, or can you offer a lift? Please indicate this when you let me know (0131 335 3161 or ewsccd@gmail.com).
Sunday 10 December. Christmas celebrations from 3.00pm in the Reid Memorial Church large hall.
We begin with a service of carols and lessons at 3.00pm. Again, we hope to introduce a carol in English to the usual Welsh favourites. This will be followed by our family party, a vestry tea for all, and games and a visit from Santa for the children (and grandchildren). As usual Santa’s little helper needs names and ages of all the wee people as soon as possible please, and the ladies of the kitchen would appreciate donations of food, sweet or savoury, for the tea. A modest charge of £2.50 if you aren’t bringing food, please, payable on the day.
Other news:
Christmas Pantomime. Once again the members of the am-dram company “Forth Dimension” are treading the boards with their annual pantomime, “Knight Fever”. Our very own Huw Thomas is busy in rehearsals for this delightfully light-hearted prelude to the Christmas season. Tuesday 5 to Saturday 9 December at South Queensferry Scout Hut, Port Edgar. 7.15pm; Saturday 2.15 and 7.15pm. Tickets (Adult £8; Child £6; Concession £7) from 0131 331 3850.
I look forward everso much to seeing you soon.
