EWSNEWS – June 2016
I plan to have your programme card ready for my next mailing, but I hope this EWSNEWS will give you plenty to look forward to in the next few months. Please come along – we want your company and your support.
The story so far…
Saturday 25 June 2016. Lunch and walking tour of Linlithgow from 12.30pm
A cheery group of us met in “The Four Marys” and had a relaxed lunch. We then walked around part of the heritage trail of this interesting town. The weather was kind and Keith had done his homework so we were entertained and enlightened.
Forthcoming events:
Sunday 24 July. Lunch, walk and visit to Dalmeny House from 12.30pm
A tasty lunch in the “Railbridge Inn” South Queensferry at 12.30 pm. should set us up nicely for a walk to Dalmeny House. We have a tour booked for 3.30pm for £10 per adult, £9 concession. Then back to South Queensferry for the keener walkers. Keith and I have scouted the walk out and it takes just over an hour along the shore, a very pretty walk with views of the bridges and islands in the Firth. I suggest thick-soled shoes as the path is stony in places. I hope to organise lifts for those wanting to walk to Dalmeny but not back (I include myself in this number!) Those not wanting to walk could have a leisurely lunch and drive round to D H. The Railbridge require numbers and a £5 deposit per person. I need to know numbers for lunch before Saturday 16 July, so please e-mail ewsccd@gmail.com stating the number for the lunch and/or walk, and whether you need or can offer a lift.
Saturday 3 September – Borders train trip plus visit to Abbotsford House
As requested at the AGM we are trying out the recently re-opened Borders Railway. We propose to catch the Borders train from Waverley to Tweedbank, leaving at 10.24am. It takes 1 hour and costs £16.20 return. We go on from Tweedbank to Abbotsford House by scheduled bus service. Lunch of soup, sandwiches, biscuits & tea/coffee for £9 has been booked for 12.00 noon. The tour of Abbotsford House (group rate £9.70) will start at 1.45pm. This will be followed, weather permitting by a tour of the grounds, before we get the bus and train back. Please put this in your diary – I’ll need numbers nearer the time.
Friday 23 September – Croeso at the Merchants Golf Club 7.30 pm
The usual autumnal fare to start the session with a warm welcome. We plan a buffet supper, quiz and party turns, and plenty of time to chat. Please note the new venue. Further details to come in my next EWSNEWS.
Saturday 1 October – Concert by the modern choir from Llanelli (The Philharmonics) Reid Memorial Church large hall, West Saville Terrace.
Huw Thomas’s brother, who lives in Llanelli, is musical director of a mainly ladies choir from Llanelli. They are a Rock and Pop Choir who are very keen to come and visit Edinburgh and perform for the Edinburgh Welsh Society. Huw says, “I know the choir leader very well, she’s a real hoot”. It would be wonderful to have as many members and friends as possible join us for this exciting evening. Donations from our members towards a vestry supper would be much appreciated. Further details in my next EWSNEWS.
