EWSNEWS – January 2017

The story so far…

The Edinburgh Welsh Society website is now being edited by Jennifer Welsher  (Hon. Sec.)

If you have any news, words and/or pictures you would like included please e-mail me (ewsccd@gmail.com) and I’ll do my best to incorporate them.

Forthcoming events:

Sunday, 22 January 2017. Film show in the Reid Memorial Church, small hall at 3pm.

We propose to show “Pride”; a joyous and heart-breaking film based on the miners’ strike of 1984 and the support one Welsh mining community received from a very surprising source. Tea and biscuits to follow.

Friday, 17 February. Chinese banquet and “Sion a Sian”. Priestfield Church hall at 7.30pm.

We meet at Priestfield Church Hall, Dalkeith Road, EH16 5HW for a Chinese banquet, served with elderflower cordial and followed by tea / coffee. Anyone wishing to drink wine or beer is very welcome to bring their own.  The supper will be followed by a light hearted “Mr & Mrs” style competition. For further details please e-mail me (ewsccd@gmail.com)

Thursday, 23 February. Talk and demonstration of traditional Welsh Dance. Reid small hall at 7.30pm.

I am delighted to tell you that Hywel Williams’ brother Idwal and sister-in-law Beth have agreed to give us a talk on the history of traditional Welsh clog dancing with demonstration and colourful costumes. Light refreshments will be served to round off a very lovely evening.

Friday, 3 March. Cinio Gwyl Dewi. Mortonhall Golf Club. 7 for 7.30pm

I am so pleased to tell you that Rev. Dr. Nerys Ann Jones has agreed to be our gwraig gwadd this year.  Nerys Ann and her husband David are well known to our Society and it will be lovely to see them both again. The venue having been confirmed there will be a meeting soon to choose the menu and set the price.  Details in my next EWSNEWS but keep the date in your diary please.

Society news

I received a lovely letter from Edinburgh City Mission thanking the EWS for the harvest food donation which the Reid Church officers passed on on our behalf.  It is good to know that the generosity of our members is appreciated and has benefitted “those who find themselves in crisis”.

I look forward everso much to seeing you soon.
