Not the market town, but a choir! Tomorrow night (Friday 14 June) Edinburgh choir Jubilo are being joined by members of the Brecon Singers in concert that includes a performance of the ever-popular Fauré Requiem at St Cuthbert’s Church on Lothian Road. The programme includes pieces by Brahms, Handel, Mendelssohn and Ireland.

Concert starts at 7.30 pm; tickets ( £12; £10 concessions) available on the door.

If you want to hear the two choirs in lighter mood, there will be a “pay at the door” 1-hour concert on the following evening, Saturday 15 June, at 6.00pm, in Inverleith St Serf’s Church, Ferry Road. Great value for a fiver!

Our St David’s Day dinner will be held at 7.00 for 7.30pm on Friday 1 March at Mortonhall Golf Club, 231 Braid Rd, Edinburgh EH10 6PB.

We are thrilled that our Gwraeg Wadd will be Ann Evans, who was an active member of our Society until her recent move to North Wales. Ann served as President in 1979–80 and 2005–7, and she and Daniel have contributed hugely to the life of the Society over many decades. It will be lovely to welcome them back and hear all their news.

Those members who have enjoyed the experience of learning Welsh at Nant Gwrtheyrn, the Welsh Language and Heritage Centre in Llithfaen, may be interested to listen to Radio 4’s Question Time at 8.00pm on Friday 15 February. Jonathan Dimbleby’s panel includes the journalist Liam Halligan, Deputy Leader of Welsh Labour Carolyn Harris MP, and the leader of Plaid Cymru Adam Price AM. Jim Hughes found a recent BBC4 repeat very interesting, and invites us to watch it. The second of Dan Cruickshank’s “At home with the British” programmes concerns terraced housing, and Dan visits the Toxteth area of Liverpool where “Gogs” were heavily involved. You can access it on iPlayer at this link until 16 May.

David Hughes points out that the programme didn’t mention the street names which are also a lasting sign of the Welsh influence in Toxteth – Madryn St / Rhiwlas St / Dovey St / Wylfa Road, etc. – all live on in Toxteth. There are many more – known as the “Welsh Streets” locally.
