EWSNEWS October 2023

The story so far:

Wednesday 13 September. Funeral.

Jean Revolta’s funeral was very well attended. It was a lovely service, a fitting tribute to a much loved lady. The Welsh Society was represented by five members, and a donation in Jean’s name has been sent to St. Columba’s Hospice.

Friday 15 September. Croeso. Mortonhall Golf Club at 7.30pm.

Our opening social in Mortonhall Golf Club, was enjoyed by 23 members and guests. We were sorry not to see Megan and Walter, who kindly kept their Covid to themselves. So sad that the bug is still around.

After a generous buffet supper we all focussed on the array of photographs pinned on the notice board, and tried to identify those present from pictures of their younger selves. Some were unmistakeable, some not so obvious. We then had a quiz, devised by David Hughes, which cleverly featured Wales, Scotland and New Zealand.

We were delighted to have as our guests Bryan and Pat Watts, President and First Lady of the Wellington Welsh Society, over from New Zealand. David and Alison had met them during their trip down under in March and were pleased to return their hospitality. For a picture of our get together I recommend you check our webpage. Bryan entertained us with a few verses penned by Max Boyce which suited the occasion well.

We rounded off the evening with community singing; and everyone left carrying boxes of food thoughtfully provided by the golf club.

Forthcoming events:

Sunday 8 October. Harvest thanksgiving service. Reid Memorial Church at 3.00pm.

A reminder that our harvest service will be held this coming Sunday in the large hall of the Reid Memorial Church, West Savile Terrace, Edinburgh, EH9 3HY.  All are welcome. Donations of food or toiletries for the local food bank would be very much appreciated. A cuppa and chat to follow the service.

Thursday 9 November. Illustrated talk via Zoom. 7.30pm.

David will give us an illustrated talk on his and Alison’s trip to New Zealand in March/April. Sounds glorious, doesn’t it. Full details of the Zoom passcodes will be in my next EWSNEWS, but please put this date in your diaries.

I look forward to seeing you very soon.
